This policy covers the unTether website at tryuntether.com and the unTether softphone applications for iOS, Android, and desktop, all operated by Untether Communication, LLC ("unTether", "we", "us"). Our approach is to collect as little as the product needs to work.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to put in the message. We keep that correspondence so we can respond and maintain a record of the conversation.
To use the unTether application you provide the connection details for your VoIP provider — typically a SIP username, password or authentication token, domain, and port. These credentials are what let the app register with your provider on your behalf.
Information the application handles
- Call audio. Voice audio travels between your device and your VoIP provider. unTether does not record calls and does not route your call audio through our servers for storage.
- Call metadata. The app keeps a local call history on your device — numbers dialed and received, timestamps, and durations — so you can see your recent calls.
- Contacts. If you grant permission, the app can read your device contacts to display names for incoming and outgoing calls. Contacts are used on the device for that purpose.
- Microphone. The app requires microphone access to place and receive calls. It accesses the microphone during calls only.
- Push notifications. To ring your device when the app is in the background, a push token is registered with Apple Push Notification service or Firebase Cloud Messaging.
Information collected automatically
Our website is served by Firebase Hosting, which records standard request logs including IP address, user agent, requested URL, and timestamp. We may collect basic, aggregated diagnostic and crash information from the application to find and fix defects.
2. How we use information
- To register your device with your VoIP provider and place and receive calls.
- To operate, maintain, secure, and improve the service.
- To respond to your support requests and other correspondence.
- To diagnose crashes, errors, and quality problems.
- To meet legal obligations and enforce our terms.
We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information with third parties for their own advertising or marketing purposes.
3. Your VoIP provider
unTether is a client application that connects to a phone service you already have. Your calls are carried by your VoIP provider, and your provider's own privacy policy, retention practices, and call-recording behavior govern the call records and any recordings held on their systems. We encourage you to read your provider's policy alongside this one.
4. Service providers
We use a small number of vendors to run the service, which may process limited data on our behalf under contract. These currently include cloud hosting and infrastructure (Google Firebase), push notification delivery (Apple and Google), and email. We limit what each vendor receives to what it needs to perform its function.
5. Data retention
Call history stored by the application lives on your device and is removed when you delete it or uninstall the app. Email correspondence is retained while it remains relevant to supporting you. Server logs are retained on a rolling short-term basis for security and troubleshooting.
6. Security
Where your provider supports it, SIP signaling is protected with TLS and call media with SRTP. Credentials are stored using the secure storage facilities the operating system provides — the iOS Keychain, the Android Keystore, or the platform equivalent. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Your rights and choices
You can revoke the app's access to contacts, the microphone, or notifications at any time in your device settings, though revoking microphone access will prevent calling. You can clear your call history in the app and remove all locally held data by uninstalling it.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port personal information we hold about you, or to object to certain processing. To make a request, email information@getuntether.com. We will respond within the time frame the applicable law requires. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
8. Children
unTether is a business communications product and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
9. International users
We operate in the United States, and information we handle may be processed there. If you access the service from outside the United States, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States, where data protection law may differ from that of your country.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the product develops. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. If the changes are material, we will make a reasonable effort to notify users through the application or by email.
